# Sanctions Agent

> Sanctions Agent is a free MCP (Model Context Protocol) server that screens person and company names against the EU consolidated financial sanctions list and the official Danish, Faroese and Greenlandic PEP (politically exposed person) lists. It is built for small businesses and regulated professionals who need to screen new customers, vendors or partners from the AI agent they already use (Claude, ChatGPT, Mistral Le Chat) instead of an enterprise compliance platform. Results are confidence-scored candidate matches for human review, not verdicts.

Key facts:

- MCP endpoint: `https://mcp.sanctionsagent.eu/mcp` (streamable HTTP, OAuth 2.1 with PKCE, dynamic client registration).
- Sign-in: a verified email address (6-digit one-time code by email). No password, no card, no sales call.
- Free tier: 10 checks a month per account. `check_sanctions` and `check_pep` each count as one check; the two status tools are free.
- Sanctions coverage: the EU consolidated financial sanctions list only, refreshed daily. Not OFAC, UN or UK HMT.
- PEP coverage: Denmark, the Faroe Islands and Greenland only, from Finanstilsynet (the Danish FSA), checked daily. There is no single EU-wide PEP list.

## Tools

- `check_sanctions(name, entity_type?, date_of_birth?, nationality?, country?, address?, id_number?, threshold?, limit?)`: Screens a person or company name against the EU sanctions list. Matching is fuzzy and transliteration-aware (a Latin-script query also matches Cyrillic-only listings). Optional details raise or lower confidence; an exact ID or registration number match is treated as near-certain. Returns ranked hits with a 0-100 confidence score, known addresses, and `list_status` (when the list was last refreshed, for the audit trail).
- `check_pep(name, date_of_birth?, jurisdiction?, threshold?, limit?)`: Screens a person against the Danish, Faroese and Greenlandic PEP lists. Each hit is `current` or `former`; `still_in_lookback` is true for someone who left office within the last 12 months, during which enhanced due diligence still applies (hvidvaskloven §18).
- `sanctions_list_status()`: When the EU list was last refreshed, and its size.
- `pep_list_status()`: When each PEP list was last updated by Finanstilsynet, and how many people are on it.

## How to read results

- A sanctions hit is a candidate, not a confirmed match. Scores of about 85 and above mean "stop and get a human compliance decision before proceeding"; lower scores need a human comparison of the details (common names produce plausible but wrong hits).
- A PEP hit is not wrongdoing and not a reason to refuse the relationship. It means enhanced due diligence: more scrutiny, senior sign-off, ongoing monitoring.
- Zero hits means no match on the covered lists only. It says nothing about other sanctions regimes or PEP status in other countries.
